An Introduction to Autumnal Hygge at The Sanctuary

What is ‘Hygge’ or if you’re from Wales ‘Hiraeth’, Scotland ‘Cosagach’ and the Irish could upcycle hygge into ‘Teolai’.   In England we do not have a particular word but often refer it to a space of familiarity, comfort and cosy togetherness.  Hygge is often described as a Danish way of living, and to be honest they do embrace it extremely well.  The little book of Hygge: The Danish Wat to Live Well by Meik Wiling - notes 10 important aspects to the concept:  atmosphere, presence, pleasure, equality, gratitude, truce, comfort, harmony, togetherness and shelter.

For the Danish Hygge offers the break from healthy living, as it encourages treating oneself through treats of coffee and cake.  It’s not just that.  It’s a whole way of life, think candles and cosy nooks.  At The Sanctuary, it’s a warm welcome with botanical delights, aromatherapy and beautiful spritzers to greet you.  Big cozy armchairs and blankets in the apothecary kitchen and a warm pot of organic herbal tea on the go chosen by the first client of the day and slowly brewing until the liquid is rich and golden. The evening clients often say they have never tasted something so rich and beautiful.

Autumn is about to show us how beautiful it is to let things go that are no longer needed.  We can learn a lot from nature though some might struggle with the change it brings.  The darker days and the longer winter nights can start to bring in the winter illnesses such as colds, coughs and some may suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) due to the lack of sunlight and vitamin D.  Here at The Sanctuary, we have found it is possible to love the autumn changes and embrace winter with a little help from our botanical friends.

Jane our founder has developed a beautiful organic spritzer to bring Hygge to the treatments and workshops she offers at The Sanctury.  It’s a beautiful blend of Bergamot, Lavender, Juniperberry and Ylang Ylang.

These have been chosen for the properties below:

Bergamot – organic essential oil

Botanical name Citrus Bergamia

It is blessed with antidepressant qualities that gives it the name of nature’s Prozac.  It is excellent for anxiety, depression and SAD.

Lavender – organic essential oil

Botanical name Lavandula Angustifolia

This botanical delight is considered to be superior to all other lavender essential oils.  This is due to its shorter growing season, grown at high altitudes so it has a high ester content.  It helps to soothe, calm and balance emotions, helps soother aches and pains including headaches.  It has anti-viral and decongestant properties so useful for treating colds and flu.

Juniperberry – organic essential oil

Botanical name Juniperus Communis

Calms the nerves, relieves anxiety, nervous tension, and mental exhaustion.  It also has pain relieving qualities and is useful for muscular aches and pains.

Ylang Ylang – organic essential oil

Botanical name Cananga Odorata.

Helps with nervous tension, stress related insomnia, shock, fear and anger.

Jane will be going all Hygge with some seasonal workshops and giving tips on how to make your own Hygge blend you can sign up for the newsletter to be kept up to date by contacting Jane.  You can book a session it the apothecary kitchen for your own bespoke blend as the season turns.
